FREEDOM THROUGH RECOVERY GROUP HISTORY
Freedom Through Recovery group of Narcotics Anonymous was started late spring of 1986. Some of the founding members were Mac H., Eddie L., Tracy and Mark P.
At the time there were three Home Groups of N.A. in Fayetteville- Just for Today group, We Do Recover group, Fort Bragg group- All of these groups were members of Coastal Carolina Area of N.A.
Freedom Through Recovery started at the request of a few professionals in different treatment facilities that wanted a better environment for their clients than what the local groups presented at the time. These founding members were willing to give it a try and the rest is history. From a small conference room at a treatment facility on Raven Hill Dr. the meeting flourished. The facility soon expanded and moved out towards 71st High School. The meeting’s longevity was approximately two years. During that time the meeting became huge, three meeting were being held simultaneously - Newcomers’ meeting for addicts with 30 days or less clean, Addicts with more than 30 days clean, and a NARANON meeting for family members. We hosted our Area Service Committee Meeting at this location on several occasions.
Our founding members felt it necessary to find a new meeting location to maintain Freedom Through Recovery’s identity as a home group; rather than a branch of the treatment facility. From this location we moved to Holy Redeemer Church off of Pamalee Drive. We stayed at this location for less than a year.
In 1989, Freedom Through Recovery Group moved to Haymount United Methodist Church. At Haymount our group continued to grow. In the early 90’s our attendance of addicts and treatment facilities (i.e. Evergreen Treatment Facility in St. Pauls, NC and Myrover Reese Recovery Homes in Fayetteville, NC and the Oxford House Facility in Fayetteville, NC) was in excess of 100 people at any given meeting. Through the years this meeting has continued to provide an atmosphere of recovery to individuals staying clean. Our meeting attendance is not as great as it used to be in numbers; but, the quality of the message being carried is still as vital today as it was when it all began. For 17 years, at Haymount United Methodist Church we are still afforded the opportunity to provide recovery to the aforementioned facilities.
